Your attendance will make this party a success – please bring a side dish such as: German Potato Salad; Beer Cheese Dip & Pretzel Bites; Spatzle; Pigs-in-a-blanket; Sauerkraut; Cabbage or Coleslaw; Fruit Salad; Apple Strudel; Pumpkn Pie, etc.

3rd Annual Oktoberfest

UPDATE: Octoberfest has been postponed to October 20th.

Dear Sandhill Soaring Club Members:

You're cordially invited to attend the 3rd Annual Oktoberfest on Saturday, October 20 @ 3:00 PM and help us celebrate the arrival of the club's newest edition to our fleet, a DG-505 ELAN Orion (N505DS), otherwise known as "Delta Sierra."

This year's Oktoberfest Party will be a pot-luck style event, so please bring a side dish with you to the party. The club will provide Brats and Hamburgers but everything else is fair game.

PLEASE.... RSVP by REPLYING BACK DIRECTLY to this email with the following: (1) Your Name; (2) the number of guests in your party; and (3) what side-dish or dessert you intend to bring. If we can help coordinate the effort to bring side-dishes so we don't get too much overlap, we will do so. We want to avoid having everyone bring the same items.

Test Driving the DG-505 @ Oktoberfest!

Members are highly encouraged to fly the new DG-505 with an approved flight-instructor at Oktoberfest... and by all means, please kick the tires and take her out for a spin! Certainly, the pun was intended here but, in the near future, the Board intends to permit members to take dual aerobatic flight instruction, upset and spin training with approved flight instructors. We think this is an exciting development, and look forward to this type of flight instruction being offered at Sandhill Soaring Club, in addition to dual cross-country flight instruction and mentoring. Note: Members will not be permitted to just freely go fly aerobatics in the glider; a "Blackbox" will be installed in the glider for the purposes of monitoring all aerobatic flight. Likewise, for the safety of everyone procedures will be put in place to track such activity.   (More Photos)

In any event, aircraft checkouts will begin officially when the Chief Flight Instructor has had a chance to formalize the DG-505's checkout regimen. This will happen soon but rules specific to this glider are likely to be adopted in an effort to ensure proficiency among pilots who fly the DG as well as its safe keeping and requisite care. On that note, PLEASE treat this ship as if it was your own Ferrari, which you had saved for a very long time, not as a beater you rent from an FBO. Having said that, this ship is meant to be flown - hours at a time no less. Now's the time to double-down on your training and experience all that modern sailplanes have to offer. For those of you who fear high-performance, you will be relieved the ship handles nicely and in its 18-meter configuration will be a dream to fly compared to 94G. There is no comparison between the two. To put it simply, the DG's handling will leave you pleasantly surprised and longing for your next flight in it again.

Lastly, the Club wants to welcome friends and family members of John Walker who will be in attendance with us at Oktoberfest. PLEASE, feel free to invite any friends or family members of your own who may be interested in joining us at 'Beautiful Richmond Airfield' to celebrate this wonderful day. Moreover, the addition of the DG to our fleet can and should be used as a tool for recruitment. Attached, you will find both a flyer announcing the Oktoberfest Party and some recent photographs taken during the glider's inspection.

FREE: Thermalling 101 Clinic

Please join us Monday, January 29 @ 7:00 P.M. at the Ann Arbor Airport to kick-off a free session of Sandhill Soaring Club's Glider Ground School called Thermalling 101.

Regular classes begin Monday, February 5, 2018 @ 7:00 P.M.

This 1.5 hr presentation will take an introductory look at everything having to do with thermalling, including:

  • What are thermals?

  • Finding Thermals: Sources of Thermal Lift? Were and how do they form?

  • Working Lift-Band

  • Thermal Selection, including how to sense a thermal and deciding when to take a thermal and when not to

  • Thermal Entry, including the 270 degree turn technique

  • Drawing a Mental Map of the Thermal's Core

  • Re-Centering

  • Changing Directions while Thermalling

  • When and How to Leave a Thermal

  • Gaggle Etiquette: Entry, Staying in Position, and Exit

  • Notes About Safety, Parachutes, and Thermalling in Contests

The clinic will be open to Questions & Answers. Thermalling is a necessary skill one must have before flying cross-country. More importantly though, if you don't become reasonably proficient in thermalling you're likely to get bored with the sport and drop out. There's only so much fun one can have flying a glorified pattern around the airport until landing. Mastering the art of themalling (or at least becoming proficient with it) makes the sport much more enjoyable for everyone.

Members, this would be a great time to invite friends, family, children, grandchildren, and any fellow pilots you know to be our welcomed guests at the Oktoberfest clubhaus celebration!

Please let any fellow pilots know they're welcome to fly-in and join us this way too!

The club has been experiencing a resurgence in growth and member activity. We're awfully proud of some of the improvements we've made to fleet and facilities this year (and are looking forward to those that are slated to take place next year). This is a great opportunity to let our guests know how much fun we have at Sandhill Soaring Club!

See you at Oktoberfest!
